Privacy Policy

Angler ("the App," "we," "us," or "our") is built around a simple principle: your screen time is your business. This policy explains exactly what happens to your data when you use Angler, in plain language.

The short version

Angler does not collect, transmit, sell, or share your personal data. Your usage statistics, scroll distance calculations, and app rankings are calculated and stored entirely on your device. We don't have a server that stores your information because we don't have a server at all.

What data Angler accesses

To function, Angler requests the following permissions from your device:

Screen Time / Family Controls authorization

Angler uses Apple's Screen Time frameworks (DeviceActivity, FamilyControls, ManagedSettings) to read which apps you use and for how long. This is the same underlying system Apple's own Screen Time feature uses. Apple designs these frameworks so that raw, identifiable usage data never leaves your device and is never accessible to Angler directly. Angler receives aggregated, on-device signals, which we use locally to calculate your scroll distance, ocean rank, and recap statistics.

You grant this permission during onboarding, and you can revoke it at any time through your device's Settings app. If you revoke it, Angler's tracking and blocking features will stop functioning until you grant it again.

Notifications

Angler asks for permission to send you local notifications, for example, when your ocean rank changes, when you hit a distance milestone, or as a reminder tied to an active block or your weekly recap. These notifications are generated and scheduled entirely on your device using Apple's UserNotifications framework. Angler has no server, so nothing is ever sent to us to trigger a notification. Every notification is computed and scheduled locally based on your own on-device data. You can manage or disable notifications at any time in your device's Settings app, or from within Angler's own notification settings.

What data leaves your device

Exactly one type of request leaves your device: a lookup to Apple's public iTunes Search API (itunes.apple.com), used to fetch the icon of an app you've used so Angler can display the correct logo in your stats instead of a placeholder. This request sends only a public app bundle identifier (for example, the bundle ID for TikTok or Instagram) and receives an icon image URL in return. It does not include your name, device identifier, usage data, or any information that identifies you personally. We do not log, store, or retain these requests on any server, because there is no server on our end to retain them.

No other data leaves your device. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising network, no crash reporting service, and no third-party code embedded in Angler that could transmit data on our behalf.

Accounts and sign-in

Angler does not require or offer account creation, sign-in, or any form of authentication. There is no username, password, or profile tied to your identity anywhere in the app.

App blocking

When you enable optional app blocking, Angler uses Apple's ManagedSettings framework to display on-device shields over apps you choose. Those shields are applied and enforced entirely on your device. Angler is not a parental-controls product or mobile device management (MDM) solution, and no blocking state is sent to us or to any server.

Blocks are optional and intentionally bypassable. You can lift or end a block from within the App through mechanisms such as Stay Strong, Double or Nothing, or by ending the block yourself. Schedules and blocking preferences live in App Group storage shared between Angler and its extensions, and remain on your device only.

Data storage

All usage statistics, distance calculations, ocean rank history, calibration settings, notification preferences, and blocking preferences are stored locally on your device, using Apple's App Group storage shared between Angler and its extensions. This data is never transmitted off your device. You can export or wipe your data from within Angler's Settings at any time, and it is also deleted automatically if you delete the app.

Children's privacy

Angler does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Because Angler collects no personal data from any user regardless of age, no additional children's-privacy safeguards are required beyond the practices described in this policy. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below and we will investigate, though as described above, we do not have the infrastructure to have received or stored such information in the first place.

Advertising

Angler does not display advertisements and does not integrate with any advertising network.

Your rights and choices

Because Angler stores all data locally and transmits nothing identifiable off your device, there is no remote profile of you to access, correct, or delete through us. You control your data directly:

To stop tracking: revoke Screen Time authorization in your device Settings, or delete the app.
To stop notifications: disable them in your device Settings or in Angler's notification settings.
To export your data: use Export from Angler's Settings.
To delete all your data: use Delete All Data from Angler's Settings, which clears App Group storage and preferences on your device.
To delete the app: deleting Angler still removes everything, since all data lives in local storage tied to the app.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Angler handles data, including if we ever introduce features that involve off-device data transmission, we will update this policy and revise the effective date above. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
